This is an adaptation of a short play by Cervantes called El Retablo de las Maravillas. A show man arrives in a little town and promises to show its inhabitants the most amazing spectacle... that can only be seen by those with no Jewish blood.
Everyone, of course, pretends to see marvels.
I can’t quite remember how I adapted it. I do remember being very proud of it. It formed one half of a double bill with a Liz Lochhead play. I remember audiences laughing wholeheartedly at Liz’s (very funny) play.
Mine they greeted with baffled silence.
