The Plays: The Constant Prince

back to main plays page

(Calderón: BBC Radio 3)

This play was famously staged by Grotowski. It is the story of a Spanish prince who is captured by the moors and chooses to die rather than allow the town of  Ceuta to fall into the power of the muslims.
But is his sacrifice worthwhile? Does it mean anything?
It is a beautiful, complex play that has never been staged in this country.
