This is a gentle but highly intelligent tragi/comedy set in a hotel between worlds. Schmidt imagines it as a place where people go when they are unconscious or in a coma; and there, under the gentle but ruthless care of a mysterious doctor, confront the painful truths about their lives.
Then they are summoned to the lift: summoned to live or die.
